Fraser Valley Water Polo

OVERVIEW

Fraser Valley Water Polo (FVWP) offers developmental and high performance water polo programs for boys and girls ages 7 through 17 years. In the 2009-10 season FVWP has grown to 105 registered athletes residing in the following 11 BC Lower Mainland towns/cities: Abbotsford, Burnaby, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Langley, Mission, New Westminster North Delta, Port Coquitlam, Surrey, White Rock.

2010 marks the 6th season of operation for Fraser Valley Water Polo [FVWP] Club. FVWP Athletes are the products of club founders - the “Mitchell Brothers”: Coach Ian, [former National & Provincial Coach] Coach Justin [current FVWP Head Coach & Women’s National Coach] & Coach Kevin [Beijing Water Polo Olympian & FVWP Club Coach]

Incorporated as a non-profit amateur sports society in November 2006, FVWP Club takes great pride in our training programs which are all “Athlete Focused & Driven”. Our quality programs are maintained by a dynamic coaching team & devoted parental volunteer base. Our water polo players train out of 6 pools including: Walnut Grove Pool, Langley, Fleetwood Pool Surrey, North Surrey Indoor Pool, Haney Leisure Centre, Watermania Richmond, & Vancouver Aquatic Centre.

GROWTH & ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE:

ATHLETE REGISTRATIONS:
2005-06 = 26 players
2009-10 = 105 players of which 66 are developmental players age 13 and under

ATHLETE ACCOLADES:

  • 15 FVWP Club Athletes have earned the honour of making the Top 30 Athletes in Canada in their age/gender divisions.
  • Of those fifteen FVWP players, 7 of our Club’s Athletes have been Selected to represent Canada on 2010 WPC National Team Programs and are ranked in the Top 20 Water Polo Athletes across the country in their respective age/gender divisions
  • FVWP 18U Boys’ Team ~ Gold Medal, 2010 Canadian National Club Championships
  • FVWP16U Girls’ Team ~ Bronze Medal,2010 Canadian National Club Championships
  • 2010: FVWP Club boasts 7 of the total 11 British Columbia amateur water polo athletes selected to Canadian National Teams

COACHING ACCOLADES
Head Coach Justin Mitchell:

  • Current Head Coach National Development Center, Vancouver BC
  • Most Valuable Coach, 18U Boys’ 2010 Canadian National Club Championships
  • 2010 Pacific Sport Fraser Valley Region Coach of the Year
  • Hired as Water Polo Canada Coaching Staff for 18U Girls’ Canadian National Team

FRASER VALLEY WATER POLO CLUB MANDATES

  • To promote the development of athletes by the delivery of quality, value-based programming throughout the Lower Mainland & surrounding areas. With skilled, qualified leadership we will provide an athlete-centered sport with accessible, affordable & equitable programming for all members. A fun, safe & enjoyable environment will be provided for all members with the opportunity for training, competition & related activities.
  • To cooperate in the pursuance of the foregoing purposes with groups & organizations in the province of British Columbia & throughout Canada, including the BC Water Polo Association & Water Polo Canada Association, having purposes wholly or in part similar to those of the Fraser Valley Water Polo Club. 
     

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Election of the Executive Committee takes place at the Annual General Meeting each year.  An incumbent may seek office for a one or two year term(s).  Any Director appointed by the Board to fill a vacancy may also be nominated to seek office for a subsequent year.  Candidates for Executive positions may be nominated by members from the floor during the AGM.  The AGM is held in September in conjunction with our Awards Celebration

Training Locations

Our athletes train out of 6 pools including: Walnut Grove Pool, Langley, Fleetwood Pool Surrey, North Surrey Indoor Pool, Haney Leisure Centre, and City Center Aquatic Complex Pool Coquitlam.

Dryland

Thirty minutes of each practice will be allotted towards dryland training.  Each athlete in the U16 & U18 age categories will receive a work program to do on their days off for strength training.  All athletes must come to practice prepared with shorts, running shoes, extra t-shirt, and water bottle.  Jeans are not permitted. 

Equipment

All athletes are encouraged to purchase and to wear a mouth guard during practices and games; however, coaches will not be expected to enforce this policy and the Club does not accept any responsibility for damages caused because an athlete was not wearing a mouth guard.
