Training and Development Programs

Fraser Valley Water Polo has a variety of program designed to meet the needs of your young athletes.

Youth Development Programs

Our part time program for the developmental & recreational skill level athletes. It includes an optional 2hr, 4hr, & 6hr pool sessions as well as a dryland training, classroom theory/video session on rules and interpretations and one scrimmage each week. We run from September-December and start back up again January-April.

FVWPC Developmental Program teaches beginners basic water polo skills: Ball Handling; Passing & Shooting; Head-Up Front Crawl; Water Polo Back Stroke; Treading Water using Rotary Egg Beater kick and; Rules of the Game.

High Performance Programs

Our Full Time water polo program runs from September through May with a scheduled break during the holidays. Our High-Performance training includes 10-12hrs a week dedicated to swim conditioning, water polo strategy, skills, drills, vigorous dryland/weights training program, micro-stretching, team-building, scrimmaging, classroom theory sessions & National/International Tournaments. Each athlete will aspire to be great water polo players as well as well rounded athletes through educational studies in physical & psychological recovery and nutrition.


14U HIGH PERFORMANCE TRAINING PROGRAM
Bantam Age - Birth Years 1998 & 97 Boys & Girls

11-Hours Training per Week Includes:

  • 8 hrs of Pool Sessions
  • 2 hrs of Dryland Sessions (4 x 30min before or after practice)
  • 1hr of Classroom Session (1 Team Building & Video)

Bantam Age Athletes (1998 & 97 Birth Years) expressing interest in participating the 16U (Cadet) High Performance Program must be assessed by FV Coaching Staff to be eligible. Contact Head Coach Justin Mitchell at valleycoach_@hotmail.com for assessment dates.

The FVWP 14U High Performance requires 10 athletes per gender in order for FVWP Club to offer these programs. All interested 14U Athletes must be assessed by FV Coaching Staff to be eligible for the 14U High Performance Program.

A selection of 13 athletes per gender will be identified based on skill level, attitude & leadership qualities. Contact Head Coach Justin Mitchell at valleycoach_@hotmail.com for assessment dates.

Goals of the FVWP U 14 High Performance Program:

  • Essential Component of FVWP Club Strategic Plan for program sustainability & longevity through identification of developing athletes with skill potential & commitment to become 16U high performance athletes
  • Aligns with Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Philosophy - now a requirement on applications for requests for grant monies from amateur sport ministries & organizations & fully supported by NSO & PSO (see WPC website for details of LTAD)
  • FVWP Club Strategic Plan -- provides FVWP Coaches opportunity to develop more than one team to attend annual 16U National Club Championships – builds depth to Club programs as well as individual athlete skills

Program News

Justin Mitchell wins Coach of the Year!

Justin Mitchell of Maple Ridge, Head Coach of Fraser Valley Water Polo, received the 2010 Coach of the Year award for his achievements in the sport of water polo. Mitchell recently coached the Men’s 18U team to a gold medal win at the National Club Championships and named the championships Most Valuable Coach. Mitchell is the co-founder and head coach of the Fraser Valley Water Polo club. Several of the club members were recently been named to junior national teams and Mitchell will co-coach the 18U Women’s National team.
 

 

2011 National Club Championship Coach Certification Reminder!!

Water Polo Canada would like to remind all of its coaches, Head Coach and Assistant Coach alike, of their necessary coaching certification for the 2011 season:

"All coaches, Head Coach and all Assistant Coaches, attending the 16U male and female events must be certified Competition – Introduction "The Practice Coach" or Level 1 certified + Level 2 Technical for the 2011 Championship season and beyond. "

"All coaches, Head Coach and all Assistant Coaches, attending the 18U, 22U, and Senior male and female events must be trained in two (2) out of the six (6) NCCP Competition – Development multi-sport modules for the 2011 Championship season and beyond. Training workshops are organized and held by the Provincial Coaching Associations."
